Just after low water gave us a big old drop in height to sea level so accurate navigation to The Crate was essential by aligning the two marker posts to progress safely up the entrance channel to Trafalgar Wharf as we moved Armarda style to moor up outside the sill which was just starting to breach on the rising tide.
As if by magic out came the sun and the breeze stopped as we headed to the bar divesting our selves of radios, life jackets and other bits and bob's, to join the many members who came by land.
Over 50 was the head count as the live DJ music filled the air to give us and excellent turnout all round. A few guests were included too, so new friends were made and stories of the wet and windy season to date were exchanged.
Your author ( and lots of others ) took advantage of the superb home made thin and crispy pizzas (try the putanesca if you haven’t so far - delicious) that were on offer from the inventive menu. The bar staff tried valiantly to keep us well watered as we tried valiantly to deplete their stock levels. I think it was a score draw on that front.
Some time after 22:30 the last remaining 5 tenders ( including Doug’s magnificent rib) entered the lock with a rather impressive entrance by a Williams under ‘full’ control.
What looked like initially being a rather damp and subdued event turned out to be an absolute belter, thanks only to all who took part and made the crossing. A credit to all and thank you for joining the pop up rally.
Quick note to say I still intend to run a ‘Pop Up Anchor Off Rally’ to Priory Bay if the weather gods align to give us an opportunity and certainly hope for more runs to The Crate this season. So keep your eyes on your Port Solent emails.
