Anchorages between Selsey and Portland, provided by Tony Firth By way of an introduction to this guide, this list is far from exhaustive and is only intended to indicate some places that I or friends have found useful or enjoyable. Where an anchorage is mentioned that I haven’t tried it, I have said so. In principle we can anchor anywhere where it isn’t actually prohibited – we aren’t restricted to areas with an anchor symbol on the chart. However, common sense will suggest that anchoring in prohibited areas or channels, among swinging moorings, near charted submarine cables or in locations with strong tidal streams is not a good idea. Under the ColRegs vessels of under 50m LOA are obliged to show a black ball on the forward part of the boat in daylight, and an all-round white light in a similar position at night. Click below and download on to your preferred device for the revised 2021 version. The main reason for this revision is the changes to anchoring and visitors' buoys that have been introduced this year, along with the changes to the Buckler's Hard Marina. Briefly, the mid-stream visitors' pontoon above the marina has been modified to provide walk-ashore facilities (with matching increases in the charge for overnight berthing). The possibility of anchoring remains between red beacons 20 and 22 (inside Gull Island), while improved visitors' mooring buoys are to be found between red beacons 24 and 26 (above Needs Ore Point, the location of the Beaulieu River Sailing Club building). Charges depend on whether access to the marina facilities (loos, showers, dinghy moorings etc) at Buckler's Hard is included. The anchorage and the moorings with white pick-ups marked V (max 40 ft) are £10 per night or £8 for a short stay (max 4h before 1530) and do not include access to marina facilities. Other visitors' buoys (orange pickups marked V), including access to marina facilities, cost £2.25 per metre overnight or £1 per metre for a short stay. |
