    RALLY INFORMATION

A sociable circumnavigation of the Isle of Wight with overnight stops in Yarmouth and Gosport.

Sailing down to Yarmouth on the Friday afternoon tide with an earlyish start on Saturday morning to take us out through the iconic Needles before the tide turns eastwards for the return sail to Gosport.

This is also a good opportunity for those who haven’t crossed the Channel who would like experience of a longer run in company whilst staying in sight of land.

Yarmouth is a picturesque fishing, ferry and yachting port, widely regarded as one of the jewels of the South Coast. The deep water harbour retains its old world charm, while visiting boats will find a range of amenities which are very much up to date, and accepted as being among the best in the Solent.

We will be mooring Saturday in Premier Gosport, the  Saturday evening meal at the Lightship

    Suggested Sailing Itinerary:

Join us for a social circumnavigation of the Isle of Wight with overnight stops in Yarmouth Harbour and Gosport Marina en route.

Sailing down to Yarmouth on the Friday afternoon, from 12noon onwards to catch the west going tide for mid to late afternoon arrival into Yarmouth Harbour (VHF CH 68)

Friday Evening: BYO Pontoon drinks (Nibbles supplied) on Friday evening from 6.00 pm beside Astrid. Supper is ‘do your own thing’ as we have a fairly prompt start and longish sail on Saturday morning.

Saturday morning: Suggest leaving Yarmouth around 7a.m. To arrive at Needles around 8 a.m. for slack water before the tide turns eastwards for our sail around the south of the island. (All Skippers responsible for their own checks and decisions).

This is a good opportunity for those who haven’t yet crossed Channel who would like to experience a longer sail in company, whilst staying in the comforting sight of land. It’s intended as a fun activity on the water, it is not intended as a race, and it does not have to be sail only - entirely up to each skipper (with maybe a bit of crew influence ) as to when engines are switched on!

With good luck, fair tide and the wind in our favour, we should arrive back into Gosport Marina (VHF CH 80) by late Saturday afternoon. (If you are a Port Solent Berth Holder - this should be a free night for you).

Saturday evening: Pontoon drinks from 6.00 p.m. beside Astrid, leaving at 7.00 prompt for 7.30 dinner on the famous Haslar Lightship.

Menu as shown below, Dinner (including 10% discretionary service charge) is £33.00 for 2 courses or £38.50 for 3 Courses.

***Dinner Choice and Payment: Please make your selection when booking and to secure your dinner reservation make £5 per head payment to Port Solent Yacht Club: 30 96 11 A/C 01020845. Balance payable in full at the Lightship on Saturday evening 31st.

Inter-boat chat will be on CH 77

    Tides:

    Fri 30th: HW Ports 14.54 4.61 LW:19.55 1.14

    Sat 31st: 02.53 4.51 LW: 08.20 1.02 HW: 15.59 4.52

We will have a WhatsApp Group for the Rally

This Rally is dedicated to the Memory of Hugh Nightingale who was keen to get this rally reinstated as a regular on our books, and who was a stalwart member of Port Solent Yacht Club

    RALLY INFORMATION

** Rally Leader Required please email portsolentyc@gmail.com if you can help**

Friday 20th June to Thursday 3rd July 2025 13 Nights returning to the UK on Thursday 3rd July.

The Cross Channel itinerary is booked as follows (all for 20 vessels):

    • 20th June 1 night Premier Gosport (foc for Premier Berth Holders)
    • 21st June 2 nights Cherbourg
    • 23rd June 4 nights St Peter Port
    • 27th June 4 nights St Helier
    • 1st July 2 nights Cherbourg

Our annual cross channel cruise is a must do rally for those wishing to gain experience of crossing the channel. It is also close to the longest day so there is approx 15 hours of daylight.

This rally is designed for both Power and Sail, but we can't control the weather.  Individual skippers will make decisions 'on the day' depending on their boat, crew and weather conditions.  Berthing nights can also be amended to accommodate the weather on the day.

It is proposed the rally will visit Cherbourg, Guernsey, Jersey and back to Cherbourg before returning to the UK, however, this is a Pick’n’Mix Rally and it is not obligatory to necessarily visit all 4 marinas, you can just book the ones you choose.

Just 77 nautical miles to Cherbourg from Gosport this 24 hour marina offers safe harbour to cross channel sailors. Ideal for a 2 night stay ready for an onward sail to the Channel Isles.

St Peter Port offers many opportunities for beautiful coastal walks, ferry trips to Herm Sark and onwards.  There is a really excellent bus service for getting around the island, or you can hire an e bike.  Also, the picturesque town itself is awash with a fabulous selection of restaurants and eateries.

St Helier. Approx just 25 miles south east of Guernsey has many beautiful beaches and places to explore, again offering a good bus service to explore the island.

We then return to Cherbourg before returning to Blighty.

    Border Control:

Online Forms do have to be completed to leave and re-enter UK (via Border Force) and to enter and leave France for each vessel.

These are quite straightforward and easily available online (Or in Cherbourg Marina office for French document).

Whilst all skippers are responsible for their own paperwork, guidance freely available by Rally Liaison if assistance required.

Channel Islands forms are supplied by the Local Marina on arrival.

(Please note that, whilst they can be taken out of the UK by yacht, pets can only re-enter the UK by Commercial means and not on a small craft.)

    Documentation:

All vessels must carry ORIGINAL documentation including bills of sale (inc original bill of sale as proof VAT has been paid) and current insurance certificate. It is also advisable to carry RYA/ICC certificates and VHF licence etc.

Note: The above Border Control and Documentation information is given in good faith and may not be up to date and/or correct.

Skippers are responsible for ensuring they fully comply with the Border Control Requirements for the UK, EU and Channel Islands and are carrying the correct documentation.

The below websites should be reliable sources of the latest regulations and requirements :

    UK Gov - https://www.gov.uk/guidance/sailing-a-pleasure-craft-that-is-departing-from-the-uk

    Cruising Association - https://www.theca.org.uk/news/entering-leaving-france-for-cruisers

    Social Programme:

    TBC

    IMPORTANT NOTE:
when navigating from Cherbourg to and from the Channel Islands it is important to be aware of the very strong tide flows of the Alderney races when passing to the east of Alderney.  Skippers advised to check their tide charts and flows carefully before proceeding.

    RALLY INFORMATION

Shepards Wharf Marina is a Cowes Harbour Commission  family-friendly facility with capacity for 130 visiting boats.  It offers a full range of services and amenities suitable for events and rallies, catering for the cruising sailor and powerboater.

High Water is at 1103 BST on Friday 8 August and is building towards Spring tides, so it is probably best to target berthing soon after HW to avoid any current challenges.  Shepards Wharf marina will provide berthing instructions on Ch 80 - you will be told if we are in the North or South visitors basin and where to berth.  NOTE:  You may be expected to raft next to another vessel..

The pontoons and wide water access channels make life very straightforward for manoeuvring your vessel within the marina.

All pontoon berths are serviced with 240v power and fresh water points, access to a holding tank pump-out facility and waste & recycling facilities. Boaters are encouraged to use the free pump-out at Shepards Marina.  The pump out berth is located on the south pontoon at Shepards.  Call the marina in advance on VHF Ch80 and Berthing Master will be glad to help.

Facilities at Shepards Marina include high-quality shower and toilet facilities at no extra charge plus onsite businesses including a restaurant.
