Port Solent Yacht Club – Staycation

The Staycation started on Friday night with drinks at The Harvester, around 36 members meeting and catching up on their sailing and family news.

Saturday morning, after a team had set up a fenced area on the park (and cleared all dog muck from the site!) they added bunting to show the way.

The weather was kind and after only one or two spits of rain the sun came out. Our area was fairly sheltered from the wind but still a little too breezy for badminton. The two croquet sets were both in action for most of the afternoon (teams playing to different Port Solent Rules!) Boule and giant Jenga were also well used.  We had 35 to 40 people picnicking and playing games as well as joining in singing “Happy Birthday” to Sean and Ewen before they blew out the candles on their cakes.

I think, it was a really fun afternoon, even if I didn’t win at croquet! It was good to meet up with some members who have not been to rallies before as well as a great gathering of friends.

Then at 3pm we all had a quick dash to clear up and change ready for the Hog Roast, held in the beautiful garden and marquee of Oyster Quay. A big thank you to Chris and Deborah for setting up before I arrived and for clearing up afterwards.

We had a huge hog with a selection of rolls, hot potatoes, salads, coleslaw, apple sauce, stuffing and of course crackling! Then the 70 odd members had an ice cream to round off the meal.

We were so lucky to had two of our members, Alan and Alison, playing live music throughout the evening. It was a great opportunity for new members to get to meet long standing members, social, sail and power.

On Sunday morning around 38 members arrived at 46 Newlyn Way for hot and cold drinks before crossing the deck to 48 Newlyn Way for brunch where a wonderful selection of bacon and sausage baps, cakes, pastries, croissants and fresh fruit were served. A big thank you to Nicky, Richard, Hilary and Mike for hosting us and doing all the work.

Well - that’s it for another year’s Port Solent Staycation with over 80 people, members, guests, family and friends attending one or more of the four events. We hope that PSYC members that took part in the RTIR also had a great day on the water while we just enjoyed being on land!
