The signature rally of the year!
Bembridge BBQ Rally 20 boats 56 crew
June 4th 2021
Once again Bembridge was the marina of choice for the PSYC BBQ Rally. Our rally hosts Julie and Derek Kalinski deciding that this year’s theme was Bollywood. The Rally held over 2 days started with the late arrival of boat especially those with deep keels, having to wait until late evening to get over the bar and into the marina. That did not stop 20 boats from taking part. Pontoon drinks on Friday night was a mixed affair as some boats having arrived on the early tide were off to dinner before the later boat arrivals. With meals on board and restaurants bookings made all crew members were well catered for.
Saturday was a day of tranquil walks along the beach, bike rides into Bembridge and for the more adventurous longer walk and rides along the coast and through the marshes in the nature reserve. For some, Julie Derek and Hilary it was a day of last-minute organization, splitting the crews into 2 sitting for the BBQ to meet all guidelines. Chasing up the Indian food orders and ensuring the BBQ area was both safe and set up to cater for our members. As evening started to fall there was a scurry of activity as crew donned Bollywood outfits, arranged saris and cooked snacks. One or two newer members arrived not dressed for the occasion, they were tourists for the evening, no matter. Members of PSYC arrange for a local gym instructor to give a demonstration of dancercise classes using Bollywood music and dance moves. Great fun was had as Emma lead a group of ladies and later men through two of the routines, learning the “screw the light bulb” and “serve the food” was a scream. After the demonstration crews sat in tables of six taking turns to use the BBQ’s. (Unfortunately dancing wasn’t possible due to restrictions in place)
Sunday came along with some very sore heads; the punch is always potent at this event and this year was no different. Lots of new and old friends attended the rally and the camaraderie was lovely to see. With the tide moving to mid-morning most boats headed for home, some however missed the tide - “Living the hangover” Whilst others using this as a jump off point for visiting the many harbors we are blessed with around the Solent.
Our thanks go to Julie and Derek for another fun filled rally; we look forward to next year’s theme being announced. We also thank all of those who attended and participated with enthusiasm. Next year we need to find space for more boats!
