Because of the inclement weather, several yachts dropped out at the last minuts and just 4 boats joined the rally. Astrid, Shiraz, Bathia and Spree.
We also had some concerns about anchoring with high gusty winds forecast, so after telephoning the Harbourmaster, and as there were only a few yachts, Derek decided to use the swinging visitor buoys at Itchenor instead.
All started out well, and everyone was enjoying a good sail - until a prolonged, monsoon downpour reduced Astrid and Shiraz crews to drowned rats! No matter, spirits were not to be dampened and Spree hosted drinks for Astrid and Shiraz on Friday evening (Bathia not arriving until Saturday morning).
Spree had to leave on the Saturday morning so the remaining 3 yacht crews enjoyed a walk to Chichester marina and back, and then had a snack lunch at Itchenor Sailing Club. Dinghy motors seemed to not want to play ball, so thanks to Rob and Katie on Bathia, their dinghy water taxi did stalwart duty ferrying everyone to and fro. We have told him to send his bill to the Club for settlement!!
The third hiccup of the weekend was that the Chef at the Ship Inn where we were all booked for dinner, took a fall and had to go to hospital. No matter, they did manage to feed us all and we then all had coffee back on Astrid before everyone retired, ready for an early start on Sunday morning to catch the tide home, in kinder weather.
Have fun and stay safe
